
he Prefecture of Herakleio lies between Mt Psiloritis and the Lasithiotika Mountains and it is the largest administrative division of Crete. It has an area of 2,641 square km and a population of approximately 250,000. From the point of view of tourist facilities, the Prefecture has a complete range of services. There are daily car- ferry sailings from Herakleio to Piraeus. Herakleio international airport is fully capable of meeting the considerable air traffic demands. There are domestic flights to Athens, Thessaloniki, Rhodes, Mykonos, Paros and Santorini. Inside the Prefecture, there are town and long- distance (KTEL) bus services to all the villages, beaches and archaeological sites. In the summer, there are ferry sailings to the Cyclades, while cruise liners operating out of Venice link Herakleio to Limassol in Cyprus and Haifa in Israel. |
