The town of Corfu
Horse-drawn carriages- a note from another age

Corfu town, which must be one of the most attractive, lively and varied cities in Greece, lies about two-thirds of the way up the island's long east coast.
It can be divided into three sections:
The old town, with its narrow alleys and the old castle.
The new town with the commercial harbour.
And the shopping district and the surrounding area, with the Kanoni and the beautiful site of Pontikonisi.

The town of Corfu - general view T
he signs of the prosperity of the past are everywhere evident.
The old Venetian fortress has been cut off from the mainland by a moat over 25m. wide, the famous Kontrafossa, so that it is completely surrounded by sea.
West of this Old Fortress spreads out the largest and most striking square in Greece, the renowned Spianada flanked by wonderful old buildings.

On the north side of Spianada is the Museum of Asian art and on the west side is the well- known Liston, a building constructed during the period of French occupation with an arched colonnade with cafes and restaurants. Spianada
Nearby is Ayios Spiridonas, the church of the patron saint of the island and the City Hall, a beautiful Venetian building. The old town is tightly squeezed into the area between Spianada and the New Fortress. A walk through the alleyways of the old town is an unforgettable experience.
T
he Archaeological Museum which contains finds from the whole island is on the south side of Spianada. Even further south is the Monument of Menecrates and Analipsis, which is one of the noteworthy places in Corfu, both of an archaeological point of view and a touristic point of view.
The Town Hall building We also suggest a walk to the Town Hall square which is dominated by the old Catholic church, a Venetian building of 1658 and the Town Hall that was initially the Loggia and later housed the Theatre.
