he largest of the Ionian islands, is a place of natural wonders, rare beauties and mysteries. The island is famous for its peculiar geological phenomena, unique in the world. In the beautiful capital Argostoli, the sea pours into swallow-holes and disappears endlessly into subterranean tunnels. The water appears again at Lake Melissani, a divine semi-underground lake of indigo colorations. Nearby is the Drogarati cave, a spectacular stalagmitic cavern. The lake Avythos is so deep that local tradition makes it bottomless. Kounopetra, southwest of picturesque Lixouri, is a rock which made a small, rythmic, non-stop motion until the 1953 earthquakes.
|he island has un unspoiled natural environment in which dominates the imposing Mt Enos. In this mountain lives a rare specie of wild ponies unseen elsewhere. Picturesque villages highlighted by tiny fishing harbours; a little further over, ruins from all the historical periods, monasteries side by side with vast beaches. Finally, the Cephalonian mysteries like the "Our Lady's snakes", the "Our Lady's lily", the animals "with gold and silver teeth" and the goats which don't drink water for six months, create a fascinating atmosphere.|
n this island, local traditions and lifestyles are preserved into an extraordinary degree. Cephalonians are reputable in Greece about the strange and pleasant idiosyncrasy they have. They are cheerful, quick-witted, imaginative, cordial and hospitable towards the foreigners who visit their island, fond of self-satire and always ready for a joke or some teasing. They use to say of themselves, that they are a little "touched" - but their "lunacy" is a kind which pride rather than shame.
