Piraeus-Salamis - the outskirts of Athens

Zea harbor (Pasalimani) in the evening
he history of Piraeus is as early as the history of Athens. In the beginning was the settlement of the shipbuilders. From the 5th century BC (from the Battle of Salamis) since today is the port of Athens. Piraeus is one of the largest ports in Europe and is the home base of Greek shipping, the largest commercial fleet in the world. Even today when both towns have been unified Piraeus has kept its own personality and fascination.
he Piraeus center itself worth at least one visit as well as and the greater Piraeus area such as Peiraiki-Zea Harbor and Kastella & Mikrolimano. Going south of Piraeus following the coastal road which goes further down to Sounion one can find some of the most elegant outskirts of the capital. The very opposite is a visit north of Athens when one can find the most expensive suburbs of the capital area. For a full impression of the outskirts of interest you must pay a visit to the most important Byzantine monasteries and churches of the grater capital area such as the insuperable Dafni and Kaisariani Monastries.
