arking facilities in the new Athens international airport have been designed to meet your needs both in terms of quality as well as quantity. A total of 4,800 parking lots have been allocated in short and long term parking while a fully automated parking system facilitates vacancy information, parking guidelines and payment. Road or rail alternatives to come someone from European continent in Athens take a reasonable time but are obviously worth considering if the plan of the visitor is to pay a visit in Greece as part of an extended trip through Europe. The most popular route is down through Italy, then across to Greece by ferry. Depending on conditions, alternative overland routes are through what was Yugoslavia or via Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. In Athens there are two train stations, almost adjacent, in city's center about 200 m. northwest of Omonia Square, off Dheliyanni Street. The Larissis Station handles the main lines, which come from the north (Western Europe, Balkans, Turkey, Thessaloniki, Northern cities of Greece). The Peloponnese Station, is the terminal for the line circling the Peloponnese. In Athens there are two principal bus terminals. Coming into Athens from Northern Greece or the Peloponnese, you will arrive at Kifissou 100, a ten-minute bus rides from the center. Routes from Central Greece arrive at a terminal at Liossion 260, north of the train stations. From the Piraeus port you can go in almost every inhabited island in the Aegean Sea, as well as to other Mediterranean ports. In Piraeus port is a very large number of regular ferries, hydrofoils and "flying dolphins" which connect the capital with the maritime Greece. From here you can catch ferries to Cyprus, Turkey, Israel and Egypt as well as and cruisers for the same destinations. Attica has two smaller ports, the port of Rafina which connect some Cycladic islands to mainland Greece and the port of Lavrio. |
